At the beginning of the 1990’s life in Moscow had become quite active. Many foreigners had commenced long-term assignments in Moscow and throughout the country. As fate would have it, exactly at this time an American journalist for CBS news, Jack Smith, was based in Moscow. Jack was a typical representative of the American mass media, i.e. quick on his feet, detail oriented, fastidious and quite successful. Jack “suffered greatly” due to the very inadequate state of the local food industry at that time. A Gourmet knowledgeable and appreciative of fine dining, Jack managed to find creative and unlikely ways to feed himself and his friends. To this day many old-time members of the Moscow ex-pat community remember with fond memories the arrival on each Thursday of the train from Helsinki which was packed with high quality food products. If you remember that Stockman train then you have been around for a long time in Moscow!
In 1992, Jack Smith’s colleagues Bill Anastos and Mario Constantino came up with creative idea of launching a mobile quick-response food delivery company – only food made of the healthiest, best tasting, high-quality ingredients. The brand name “Jack’s” was agreed upon due to the charismatic personality of Jack Smith, and by the old American saying “before you can say Jack Robinson”, meaning a very fast action or event.
